SUMMARY:
Melanin content in hair matrix is important for initial temperature increase at the distal portion of the growing hair follicle being thus the necessary condition for the photoepilation. This condition is however not sufficient for effective hair removal. Intra-anagen heterogeneity of the light sensitivity as well as its possible correlation with sonic hedgehog activity, that mainly determines the remodelling processes in hair follicle, may be responsible for different seemingly paradoxical effects of the photoepilation. It is concluded that the theory needs much modification, along with revision of the optimal treatment strategy.
